Enhance Your Photography Skills

Tallyn’s Professional Photographic is considering offering a series of Basic Portrait and Lighting Classes. We want to guage interest and collect feedback before anything is confirmed. If you would like to be kept informed, we encourage you to fill out our form below.

This series of classes would be based on a program that Scott Tallyn has presented numerous times across the country, updated for the newest digital cameras and professional lighting gear, while maintaining the fundamentals which have gone unchanged:

The Art of Studio Lighting and Portraiture
Taught by Scott M. Tallyn

Our 4 week course is designed to introduce to beginning and intermediate photographers the skills required to compose quality professional portraits. All lessons will be hands-on and students will be given the opportunity to immediately apply what's taught through simulated shoots with available models.

We will cover a wide variety of topics including:

  • The proper application of various lighting options, from hot lights to portable strobes and studio flash systems,
  • the fundamentals of studio light metering and setting power levels properly,
  • the understanding of lighting ratios and how they apply to the final portrait,
  • the proper positioning of lights for a variety of controlled compositions,
  • the varied effects and uses of light modifiers from soft boxes to reflectors,
  • the fundamentals of subject posing,
  • and the use of and options available in studio backgrounds,

Classes will be offered either Tuesday or Thursday nights, beginning sometime in early 2012 and running from 7:00 to 10:00 PM. The size of each class would be limited to 8 students per night (either Tuesday or Thursday) in order to guarantee individual attention, hands-on instruction and live shooting experience. Enrollment will be on a first come first serve basis with those who provide their information below being given priority once plans are finalized.

Equipment Requirements

To ensure your ability to apply everything you will learn, certain minimum equipment requirments must be met. We ask that everyone enrolled bring their own digital SLR camera (point-and-shoots will not be appropriate or acceptable), preferrablty with a telephoto zoom lens covering standard to telephoto ranges (24-70, 24-105, 24-120, 28-135, 70-200, etc). Please also bring an ample supply of media cards, fresh batteries, and a notebook and pen or pencil.

Costs have yet to be determined for our classes, but we intend on having a single price to cover the entire series of classes.
